Kapetanica Janeway rodila se u Bloomingtonu, Indiana. USS Voyager bio je prvi brod kojim je zapovijedala. Na njezinu zalost, prva misija je nju i njezinu posadu nezgodom odnijela u Delta kvadrant, daleki dio galaksije, 75 000 svjetlosnih godina od Zemlje. Posada Voyagera je tako ostala sama i izolirana, oko 70 godina putovanja daleko od Zemlje.

Buduci da se svaki od 175 clanova posade Voyagera nasao daleko od kuce, bez obitelji, kapetanica je odlucila pretvoriti posadu u jednu veliku, blisku obitelj, izgradujuci dobre odnose s mnogim svojim casnicima, stvarajuci bliska prijateljstva (osobito sa zapovjednikom Chakotayem).

Kapetanica u slobodno vrijeme igra tenis, pije kavu (puuuuuno kave), druzi se sa svojim prijateljima iz posade (posebno s Chakotayem i Seven of Nine) te provodi vrijeme u holografskim programima, gdje redovito upoznaje mnoge zanimljive muskarce.

Zajedno, sami protiv svih, Voyagerovi casnici predvodeni neustrasivom i odlucnom kapetanicom Janeway krecu na dug put prema Zemlji, istrazuju opasan i nepoznati svemir i brane se od mnogih napadaca i neprijatelja - Kazonaca, Vedienaca, Hirogenaca, vremenskih anomalija i zle Borg Kraljice, ludih holografskih programa i makrovirusa, inteligentnih zivih maglica i svemocnih bica, vrsta iz drugih dimenzija i ostalih divota Delta kvadranta.......
